Other People’s Houses is the title of a Paul Kelly song, a most poignant and thought-provoking song which will resonate with persons of a certain age. My old mum had to go out and ‘do’ for better off folks from time to time to put food on the table when there wasn’t enough work around for my old man, and the song evokes memories of such times in a quite startling way. Despite the tale taking place some twelve thousand miles distant, the parallels thrown up can’t fail to bring those circumstances to mind on hearing the lyrics.
Other People’s Houses (OPH) is also a worldwide online discussion group sharing information about the man, his vast catalogue of music, his movement through tours, works in progress and collaborations with the cream of Australia’s musical talent.
Around the same time I discovered McStorytellers and these stories were the first I submitted to the site, adding others, unrelated, as a result of the encouragement sent out by Brendan Gisby, an encouragement which instilled a certain confidence in me and my scribblings.
I like the collection, and I hope others will like it, too, perhaps enough to create similar collections and maybe submit them to McStorytellers so that I and everyone else involved can read and enjoy them.
You can download the collection from Amazon here.
