After seven weeks in Taiwan I finally asked Kate why she was so sure that the wallet wouldn't get stolen. This is what Kate told me:
If your daughter dies young and unmarried in Taiwan it is traditional to leave her purse somewhere in public, complete with her details and picture. If this purse is picked up by a man that man is duty bound to marry the dead girl (I am not making this up).
Apparently that last famous incident was decades ago but the fear is still there. Kate told me of a wedding where the dead girls corpse was at the wedding, suspended on a frame at the alter (again I'm not making this up) The happy couple then spent the night together in a hotel room before she was returned to her grave and he returned to a very lonely marriage.
