It's a fact of life that can be reassuring and unsettling in equal measure.
Because I'm promoting a book just now, I was going to link to a song called Fiction Romance by The Buzzcocks. It's a romance novel, see, and the title matched perfectly.
And there you see about things changing. This is a romance. I've mostly written noirish pieces for a good while and here I am sending out hearts and flowers. The thing is, it's not such a leap as you might imagine. I have had a short existential romance (published by Untreed Reads) out for a few years. Much of my early writing was poetry and often romantic (in both the love and the political sense). So here I am. Things change, but not as much as you might think.
Then I'm watching the TV and on a channel with adverts, not that common in my house the advert thing. Up comes the opening to one of my favourite Buzzcocks songs, Boredom. It's selling something at Sainsburys, in fact, I think it's just selling Sainsburys - don't be bored this summer, buy stuff.
Here's this powerful burst of music blasting out within the mainstream. It's joined a list of many a punk anthem that has become tepid over time. Grannies dance to Pretty Vacant at weddings. Should I Stay Or Should I Go? It's joined the rebellious rock and roll and jazz and hippy numbers and folk outbursts to become part of the wallpaper.
That makes me a little sad until I remember about the change thing, then I remember that it's just the world turning and me getting older. At least I can link to some great music so you can listen in.
I'm looking forward to someone putting out some of the wildest Beefheart or something from The Residents 'Eskimo' album in the future and see what the label on the tin is then.
Back to the promo.
The book's in a different genre, but I haven't changed too much. I tried to make it funny (it's a comedy), romantic (it's a romance) and engaging (it's a story).
I hope I've pulled it off. You can find out by downloading a copy via this link and then you can let me know what you think.
Bye Bye Baby.
